America is an Idea

America is an idea

For Paul Auster

England is a scone with clotted cream

France, a fresh baguette

Greece, so blue it hurts to see

America is an idea

Brazil is samba in the streets

Argentina, the Pampas ever wide

Germany has potential

America is an idea

Denmark is a long beach

Sweden, a thousand islands small

Australia, a didgeridoo

America is an idea

Japan is a cherry bloom

Scotland is the heather’s home

Oh, but how wonderful to be exactly this

America is an idea
